Hot take: Vintage shopping in Paris is a bit overrated. I’m not saying it’s bad and there are several shops and sellers I do really love but I am often underwhelmed by the selection (and the turbo taxed prices). That being said, feel free to send me your favorite spots in Paris and I’ll go check them out next time. I’ll also probably post a Paris shopping guide at some point. Anyways… Here’s what I actually bought in Paris.
YSL Rive Gauche red shoulder bag
That’s right… I added yet another tiny bag to my collection. I’m not positive, but I think this one is from 2002 or 2003. It’s made from a full grain leather in this lovely, rich red color. I have a pair of Guidi boots in a similar coloring and I really love how it ages. I snagged it from Dolce Vita Hub, an archive store in the 11th arronddcmsdicjdv that specializes in brands like Armani, Cavalli, and Dolce & Gabanna. Admittedly, I probably paid a slight premium but I am pretty hyped about this bag and know I’ll wear it a ton. There are a few listed online if you also need a tiny, red bag in your life.
Vintage Pins
After 6 trips to Paris, I finally went to a flea market (Marché Dauphine). I don’t know if I was overwhelmed, overheating, or all the above but I only wound up buying a little sack of vintage pins. There were a lot of other cool things (prints, vintage workwear, records, and every other collectible imaginable). The pricing was kind of all over the place. One lady wouldn’t even tell me the price of a chore coat because it was “too expensive”… Damn
Anyways, the pins… Most of them aren’t necessarily super personal to me. I got a french Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles one, a french McDonald’s one (as someone who usually goes at least once when in Paris), a Lakers one, and a handful of others. I think the key is to just get a bunch and piece them together later. I added a few to a vintage Hercules work jacket of mine (as pictured below). Best of all, they were only 1 euro each.
HM: Colbo x Sperry’s
Aside from the two purchases, I was graciously gifted an item that I want to include. If you know me, you know that I love the store Colbo. It’s a great shop in the Lower East Side that carries a nice selection of independent designers (mostly in beige and brown). They also have an in-house label that is very impressive and thus landed them their first footwear collaboration.
Now I’ve been a boat shoe skeptic for a while now. Last season it felt like every brand was trying to force them upon us and I couldn’t help but think about the cooked combination of them with Nike elite socks every time. That said, this pair for whatever reason feels more loafer-y to me. I paired them with some vintage dutch military cargos and a big shirt from Studio Wenjue Lu. They were very comfortable on the Parisian cobblestone. Although because the outsole is leather, they are quite slippery if you get caught in the rain (which of course I did).
So yeah… those are my Parisian pickups. Let me know what you think.
And sorry that most of the photos kinda suck
Mark’s first pick-up blog with no jacket included!? Unsubscribed 😋
